Hello fellow beekeepers, some say that it’s normal for bees to die during the wintering period and that we should just focus on spring breeding when the season comes. However, whether bee mortality during winter is normal depends on the circumstances.
- Low Mortality Numbers: If only a few bees die, this is considered normal. During the wintering period, some worker bees will naturally die of old age. The longer the wintering period, the more worker bees will die from aging. Additionally, some bees may be on the periphery of the cluster for an extended period and could freeze to death. Thus, a small number of bee deaths during winter is a normal phenomenon, and beekeepers need not be overly concerned in such cases.
- High Mortality Numbers: Recently, many beekeepers have reported a significant number of bee deaths in their colonies. Is this normal? In fact, high bee mortality is not normal, and we must identify the cause and address it. What could be the reasons? It could be due to insufficient feed, inadequate insulation, or invasion by pests and diseases. We should solve the problem based on the identified situation.
